IWD: #InspireInclusion with Samantha Seng, Senior Talent Acquisition

by Vincent Yao

This International Women's Day, I interviewed Samantha Seng, a Senior Finance Talent Acquisition consultant, and she shared her thoughts on how we can #InspireInclusion.

When we inspire others to understand and value women's inclusion, we forge a better world. The IWD 2024 campaign theme seeks to inspire others to understand and value women's inclusion. Organisations, groups, and individuals worldwide can all play a part, and to truly include women means to openly embrace their diversity of race, age, ability, faith, body image, and how they identify.

International Women’s Day belongs to everyone, everywhere. Collectively, we can all help create a diverse, equitable and inclusive world.

1. What does inclusion mean to you, and why?

Inclusion, to me, is about creating an environment where every individual, regardless of gender, background, or identity, feels valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives and talents. It is about fostering a culture where everyone's voice is not just heard but celebrated, where we draw strength from our differences and unite under a common goal.

2. What are some actions you have seen organisations take to commit to inclusion in the workplace?

I've seen organizations truly commit to inclusion by going beyond policies and checklists. They've created spaces for genuine dialogue, where employees feel safe to share their experiences and perspectives. From flexible work arrangements to mentorship programs that champion diversity, these actions show a real dedication to fostering an inclusive environment.

3. What initiatives or strategies can be implemented to increase the representation of women in leadership positions in your industry?

Increasing women's representation in leadership isn't just about ticking boxes; it's about nurturing talent and creating pathways for growth. That might mean providing targeted support and development opportunities, but it also involves fostering a culture that values collaboration and diverse viewpoints at every level.

4. Why is International Women’s Day important to you?

International Women's Day holds a special place in my heart because it's a reminder of the progress we've made in advancing gender equality while also acknowledging the work that still needs to be done. It's a day to celebrate the achievements of women past and present, and to recommit ourselves to creating a more inclusive and equitable future.

5. What advice would you give aspiring women in the industry you work in?

I'd say: Believe in yourself, even when it feels like the odds are stacked against you. Seek out mentors who can offer guidance and support, and never underestimate the power of your own voice. Your unique perspective is a valuable asset in driving innovation and success.

6. What does being an effective ally for women look like to you?

Being an ally means more than just saying the right things; it's about showing up and actively supporting the women around you. It's about listening with empathy, amplifying their voices, and using your privilege to challenge injustice whenever you encounter it.

7. What are some commitments individuals can make to help inspire inclusion for women, for example, calling out discrimination when you see it?

Individuals can inspire inclusion for women by committing to educate themselves on issues of gender bias and discrimination, speaking up against injustice when they see it, and actively supporting and uplifting women in their personal and professional lives. It's about being an ally, not just in words, but in actions.

8. What advice would you give to future generations to aid in a gender-equal world?

I would advise them to challenge traditional gender norms, embrace diversity and inclusion, and never underestimate the power of their own voices and actions in creating a more equitable world for all. Equality isn't just a goal to strive for, but a fundamental human right that requires continuous effort and commitment.

9. International Women’s Day is also about celebrating women and their achievements; what woman/women inspire you?

There are many women who inspire me, from trailblazing leaders like Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Michelle Obama. Each of them reminds me of the incredible strength and resilience that lies within every woman.

10. Can you share a personal or professional experience that has inspired you to advocate for women’s inclusion?

An impactful moment for me was witnessing the positive transformation in my team when we embraced diversity. Specifically, the inclusion of talented women brought unique perspectives and creativity and reinforced my belief in the power of gender diversity. This experience motivates me to actively advocate for women’s inclusion, fostering environments where their voices are not only present but valued and celebrated.
